John has been in commercial law since 1983. His expertise includes securities law, health law, intellectual property, and company law.
He specialises in general commercial work, including the drafting of local and international contracts, advising on business processes and structures, and intellectual property issues. He also handles commercial property and rural property transactions.
Variety is one of the keys to John's enjoyment of his commercial work. He gets to see a range of fascinating industries, from niche enterprises to major companies; from the franchising of private gyms to television production. In many of them, his role goes beyond that of providing legal services to being a business confidante and an experienced adviser.
"Being a true adviser goes further than being a lawyer in a technical sense. It comes from building relationships and earning a reputation for getting the job done," says John.
"People usually use an intermediary before making a decision, and it's good to be able to help them. We meet the needs of our clients as a traditional professional service firm."
John enjoys the people contact, and being able to document things in an understandable way for his clients. Away from the office he is heavily involved with
corporate governance which involves acting as Chair for several Boards of Directors as well as acting as a director and trustee for a number of local
companies and trusts. He also enjoys watching his children on the sports field as well as indulging a passion for mountain biking.
